About Us.
Thank you for wanting to know more about the people behind
Sugar Town Babies.
It is owned and operated as a family business on the beautiful
Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia.
Nigel Duncan and Cathy Smith are known to many on the coast as
midwives that have provided loving and professional care since
1998. Working at a local maternity unit they have been involved with the arrival of hundreds of babies to new parents.
Cathy
Since 2000 Cathy has also become renowned for her fantastic and beautifully appraised and desired pregnancy and portrait photography. Her work as a photographer has brought her international acclaim and has secured her reputation for the best pregnancy and family portrait photographer on the Sunshine Coast. Her photographic website can be viewed at the following sites.
Cathy has a studio in the same premises as the shop on the upper mezzanine affording a fantastic opportunity for anyone to "kill two birds with one stone".
Cathy was born in Mansfield Victoria and was a student at MLC Melbourne. She completed her nursing studies and moved to Queensland. It is sometimes forgotten but not by those that have experienced it but Cathy herself has been a midwife for 13years, training in Northern Queensland. She worked at Selangor at it inception in February 1998 and has been an active and valued member of the team of midwives since.
Cathy trained as a professional photographer and gradually it became evident because of her experience and artistry this was were life was steering her. Her work has now meant she has been sought after by celebrities and international clients as well as servicing the needs of the Sunshine Coast discerning clientele
Cathy assists in the shop with Nigel and together assists in affording an unequalled ability at providing information and support for the parents to be and those with young families..
Nigel
Nigel is well known and recognised on the coast as being a midwife that was always attentive to the families under his care. Many hundreds of women have enjoyed his care whilst on their journey to becoming parents and the adaption of family life,
Nigel original from England embraced Australia as his home in February 1998.
Nigel began working at Selangor from the moment it opened he was considered a valuable asset to the team of midwives there. Assisting with his knowledge of waterbirth, homebirth and active birthing processes. He and Cathy also began homebirthing as independant midwives on the Sunshine Coast to many several families and organised a Homebirth Conference in 2000 at Noosa that acheived international recognition.
Nigel now affords the same commitment that has been enjoyed by so many of clients that have come to know him in this his new role.
He wants to gain a reputation for Sugar Town Babies as a place to go for informal information moving in to active antenatal education (Through Classes yet to be announced), as well as a source for all things pregnancy and babies. He has a commitment to provide objective and accurate assistance in the choices of products as well as information and hopes people come to trust his opinion on choices they have to make.
As a Family
Cathy and Nigel indeed practise what they preach by way of the family. They live in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with their four children Erin, Roisin, Angus and Freya. They lost a child who chose "not to come out and play" in 2002 at 24 weeks. Losing India as hard as it was assisted them in understanding the loss of a child and both Nigel and Cathy have used this to support other families.
It was family life that ended the homebirthing status of Cathy and Nigel as it was almost impossible to maintain the commitment and time demands.
Indeed the shop itself it is hoped will further enable a commitment to family time.
