Feeding Your Baby
What to consider when making a decision about using
formula milk When compared to babies who are fully
breastfed for three to four months, bottle fed babies are:
- five times more likely to go into hospital with
diarrhoea;
- twice as likely to go into hospital with a chest infection;
- twice as likely to suffer from a middle-ear infection;
- five times more likely to have an infection in their urine;
- twice as likely to develop eczema or a wheeze if they come from a family with a history of allergies;
- (premature babies) are up to 20 times more likely to suffer a rare but serious condition called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
Breast and bottle – mixed feeding
Some women mix breastfeeding and bottle feeding.If you want to breastfeed, it isn’t a good idea to give any formula feeds for the first six weeks while your body is sorting out your milk supply. Any breastfeeding is good for you and your baby.The longer you can continue,the better. However,feeding your baby only breastmilk for the first three to four months is most effective inprotecting your baby against the infections mentioned above.Even if you begin to bottle feed your baby from birth,it is possible to start breastfeeding if you decide to do this within the first few days.However,if you are thinking about breastfeeding, it isprobably better to give it a try as soon as possible after birth.
About 98 out of 100 women can breastfeed. Very few women produce insufficient milk for their baby, although this is one of the most common anxieties women have.The amount of milk produced can be affected by many things; for advice,talk to your midwife,Child Health Nurse or a breastfeeding counsellor/ Lactation Consultant. If you wish to go back to work and continue breastfeeding, it is a good idea to seek advice from local breastfeeding support groups or your health visitor and to find out what facilities might be available toyou in your workplace.It is a good idea to include your partner in the discussions about breastfeeding so that you both have the facts.Women with partners who approve of breastfeeding are much more likely to breastfeed successfully than women whose partners do not support them.
Choices
Breastfeeding
Advantages:
- it protects your baby against serious illnesses including diarrhoea and vomiting, chest,ear and urine infections, eczema and wheezing; it may offer some protection for you against developing ovarian cancer, breast cancer and Osteoporosis;
- it will help you lose weight by ‘burning up’ any excess fat that you carried during your pregnancy;
- children who have breast milk for eight months or more have higher IQ scores and have been shown to achievemore at school than babies who have formula milk;
- women who breastfeed report feelings of satisfaction and closeness with their baby that they associate with this unique experience.
- Breastfeeding is a gentle way for newborns to transition to the
world outside the womb.
- it promote optimal physical and mental development.
- Colostrum (the first milk) is a gentle, natural laxative that helps
clear baby’s intestine, decreasing the chance for jaundice to
occur.
- The skin-to-skin contact encouraged by breastfeeding offers
babies greater emotional security and enhances bonding.
- The activity of sucking at the breast enhances development of
baby’s oral muscles, facial bones, and aids in optimal dental
development.
- Breastfeeding appears to reduce the risk of obesity and
hypertension.
- Breastfeeding increases the effectiveness of immunizations,
increasing the protection against polio, tetanus, and diptheria
vaccines.
- Breastfeeding protects against developing chronic diseases such
as: celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and childhood cancers.
- Increased levels of oxytocin stimulate postpartum uterine contractions, minimizing blood loss and encouraging rapid uterine toning.
- From 3 months to 12 months postpartum, breastfeeding increases the rate of weight loss in most nursing mothers.
- Because breastfed babies are healthier, their mothers miss less work and spend less time and money on pediatric care.
- Lack of Breastfeeding Increases the Risk to the Infant of:
Ear infections
Childhood diabetes
Obesity
Gastrointestinal and diarrheal infections
Childhood cancers
SIDS Respiratory infections
Allergies
Disadvantages:
- if you have a blood-borne virus,such as Hepatitis B or HIV,
or you are on certain types of medication, these can bepassed
on to your baby in the breast milk.
- Some women may experience difficulties with breastfeeding
that relate to their individual breast size and shape,their baby’s
size,shape and needs,as well as the environment in which
breastfeeding takes place. This may lead to negative feelings
about breastfeeding and their ability to feed their baby.
Although breastfeeding is thought to be ‘natural’ it is actually a skill
that requires support.
Formula feeding
There is now a wide range of baby milks available and thesecome in a variety of forms (eg powder, liquid – concentrated and ready-made).
The majority of formula milks are derived from cow’s milk although there are products available that use alternative substances. Many women consider that if they bottlefeed their baby,this is convenient and can be shared amongst the family.
Advantages:
- formula milk has extra vitamin K added to it;
- your baby may sleep for longer periods between feeds.
Disadvantages:
- formula-fed babies are more likely to suffer from someserious illnesses;
- mistakes can be made when making up formula feeds – the mixture can be too strong, too weak or too hot;
- your baby is more likely to become overweight in childhood.
